Senior Spotlight: Jacob Lord
With USC’s Electrical Engineering program ranked No. 1 in the South* – I knew I would be learning from the right people!”
*(per NRC assessment of USC's Doctoral Program in Electrical Engineering)
Fourth-year Electrical Engineering student Jake Lord was awarded the Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) Fellowship for his scholarship and leadership in the Department of Electrical Engineering during his undergraduate years.
Lord, Columbia, S.C., decided to attend University of South Carolina due to its proximity to home and his family. As as a child he loved to take things apart and putting them back together, but never imagined it would evolve into anything more.
“I never thought I would end up going to college as a child,” said Lord, “but I soon realized that I couldn’t teach myself everything I wanted to learn and that ultimately led to me studying Electrical Engineering.”
Lord has been involved in the department as a member of the Student Advisory Board and by being a Teaching Assistant.
“I really enjoy the opportunity to touch other people's lives and share with them the knowledge I've gained thus far."
Even though Lord loves being a TA, he has no future plans of teaching. He will be attending the graduate progam at USC in hopes of earning his Ph.D., which means he will be in the department for another three or four years. He plans on studying and working with semiconductors during grad school.
“I would describe Electrical Engineering as the backbone of modern society. Just try to imagine how different things would be without electricity,” said Lord. “Electrical Engineering is the tool that allows us to manipulate electricity to our advantage.”
Lord stated that one of his best experiences in his undergraduate years was during the 201 lab when he finally was able to have hands on experience. He also loved making the car in the 302 lab because it brought together theory and practical knowledge from everything he had learned prior.
In the future, Lord hopes to use the experience he gains in graduate school to change the world ... and possibly invent something interesting along the way.
